At the University of the Pacific’s Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program, we believe in preparing students not just for graduation, but for thriving careers in occupational therapy. One of the cornerstones of our program—and what truly sets us apart—is our innovative capstone projects.
Designed to go beyond the classroom, our capstone experiences empower students to engage with communities, address real-world challenges, and leave a lasting impact in the field of occupational therapy.
What Makes Our Capstone Projects Unique?
Hands-On Innovation with a Purpose
Our capstone projects are not just academic exercises—they are carefully structured 14-week experiences that allow students to combine research, program development, and customized solutions for community needs. Each student produces three deliverables:- A conference presentation based on their research.
- A program development project to address a specific need.
- A deliverable tailored to their site’s unique requirements.
From the very first week, students hit the ground running, completing an Institutional Review Board (IRB) submission, ensuring their projects meet the highest ethical and research standards. By week seven, they’re presenting significant progress on all three deliverables. This rigorous timeline ensures students stay engaged, focused, and ready to make a meaningful contribution.
Building Real-World Connections
At Pacific, we prioritize community partnerships. Our students collaborate with organizations that range from rural businesses and tech companies to nonprofits and immigrant farming communities. These partnerships allow students to address diverse occupational therapy needs while forging meaningful connections with potential employers. These capstones aren’t just about gaining experience—they’re about building a professional network and contributing to community health and well-being in a way that lasts long after graduation.
Preparing for Success Beyond Graduation
The result of this hands-on, community-focused approach? A majority of our students secure job offers before they even graduate. By working on impactful projects, they gain a competitive edge that employers value.Whether designing a program to support individuals with Parkinson’s disease, addressing gaps in mental health services, or improving accessibility for underserved populations, our students graduate with practical experience and a portfolio of work that sets them apart.
Real Stories, Real Impact
Empowering Local Communities: One of our students collaborated with a nonprofit serving immigrant farmers, developing tailored ergonomic solutions to prevent injuries in agricultural work. This project not only improved lives but also showcased how occupational therapy can intersect with unique industries.
Advancing Tech in OT: Another student worked with a tech company to develop a virtual reality program for stroke rehabilitation, combining cutting-edge technology with evidence-based practice to create a tool that improves patient outcomes.
Supporting Mental Health Advocacy: Through partnerships with rural healthcare organizations, a student created a mental health intervention program, providing underserved communities with access to much-needed resources. These projects highlight the breadth of opportunities and the real-world impact our students make while still in school. Why Pacific’s Capstone Experience Sets Us Apart
